Our Story

Streetlight Schools transforms education, overcoming challenges to provide innovative, high-quality learning that empowers students for life.

Melanie Smuts started Streetlight Schools with a clear vision: to tackle the deep-seated challenges of the South African education system while seizing the transformative opportunities at hand. She recognised how outdated schools perpetuate a cycle of poverty, failing generations of children, and saw the critical shortage of trained teachers as a barrier to delivering high-quality education. Yet, Melanie also saw the promise of innovation—how technology could disrupt traditional learning and spark transformation. She believed in the potential to cultivate a new generation of talented, passionate teachers who could redefine education. With this vision, Streetlight Schools was born to create a brighter future for South Africa’s learners.

In January 2016, we launched Streetlight Schools: Jeppe Park Primary, providing quality education to one of Johannesburg’s most underserved communities. More than a school, it became a space where young minds thrived, surpassing international benchmarks in Numeracy and Literacy, while fostering creativity, problem-solving, and resilience.

2016

Despite its success, we closed Jeppe Park Primary in December 2022 due to challenges stemming from poverty, community violence, and rising xenophobia, which made it unsafe for staff and students. A group of learners and teachers transitioned to Sacred Heart’s grounds, continuing their education in a safer environment.

2022

Building on this legacy, we have opened Streetlight Schools: Jeppestown High School in 2025, welcoming 75 Grade 8–10 learners. This new chapter continues our mission to provide holistic, high-quality education, nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.

2025

At Streetlight Schools, we remain committed to empowering children to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
